Addition of Real Numbers

Adding Numbers with the same sign:

Add the absolute values of the numbers and apply the common sign.

-5 + (-3)

-1 + (-7)

6 + 4

Adding Numbers with different signs:

Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value. Then apply the sign of the number having the larger absolute vlue.

-2 + 5

4 + (-18)

Subtraction of Real Numbers

If a and b are real numbers, then

a – b = a + (-b)

8 – 5 = 8 + (-5)

12 – 10 = 12 + (-10)

5 – 7 = 5 + (-7)

8 – (-2) = 8 + 2

Multiplication and Division of Real Numbers

positive times positive = positive

5 4 = 20

2 30 = 60

negative times negative = positive

-2(-4) = 8

-3(-5) = 15

positive times negative = negative

3 (-4) = -12

negative times positive = negative

-5 3 = -15

positive divided by positive = positive

20 / 4 = 5

30 / 2 = 15

negative divided by negative = positive

-20 / (-4) = 5

-30 / (-3) = 10

negative divided by positive = negative

-20 / 4 = -5

-30 / 3 = -10

positive divided by negative = negative

20 / (-4) = -5

30 / (-3) = -10
